While I don’t particularly care for the idea of government handouts, I am a supporter of at least one, the Homeowner’s Assistance Program, also known as the HAP.
In 2009, Congress expanded the benefits to include military members who are required to relocate and face financial loss when selling their homes in areas where real estate values have declined because of the home mortgage crisis. Even if you do not qualify for benefits, there is a very good chance that you know someone who does.
This isn’t a $500 tax credit. This is like winning the lottery. Last month I sold a house and the sellers received a $60,000 US Treasury check from Uncle Sam. And that was for a $200,000 house! I have to chuckle as I write this because it sounds like a cheap infomercial. But it is not. It is real and I have brokered several of these deals this year.
Remember that these benefits are not for everyone. Uncle Sam has asked those who are eligible to uproot their families at great personal cost. He is simply covering the cost.
Eligibility is fairly straight forward. You must have purchased your home before July 2006 and PCS’d (moved) before October 2010 (this date may be extended through Sep 12).
So there you have it. We do not get many opportunities to hit “undo” after a financial loss. Don’t miss this one. Call me today and I will help you get started.
